Sometime around the 4th...

I love this country, despite its flaws and that guy running it right now, I think I can hold out for another 2 years for a fresh start. Despite all the crap going on in the world right now we had such a wonderful 4th of July week! So many things happened in the span of such little time I don’t know where to begin.

Firstly, congratulations to my good friends Matt (ex-roommate) and Carolyn on their recent marriage on the 1st of July. A fun time had by all, so much so that the party lasted until 5:30am the next morning. It took me all of Monday to get my head straightened out.

Secondly, on the same wedding Saturday, roommate Brooke celebrated her birthday. We (me and Mr. Rich) bequeathed to her some Koigu KPPPM sock yarn, some #2dpns, a silk bag from Lantern Moon, and a little box with some knitterly essentials such as tape measure, scissors, and the like. More fun had by all! Now, Brooke is working on her first ever pair of socks (toe up nonetheless). She is developing into quite the knitting prodigy.

Thirdly…drumroll…trumpets…saxomophone…the leaves and waves shawl is done! Yay! Yay! Huzzah! Hooray! This was my first ever large scale, mohair, lace, endeavor. I completed the project sooner than expected which resulted in an increased sense of smugness. It wasn’t blatant bragging. Perhaps I should have…bragged I mean. I just felt really, really good about myself is all.

So now that the mammoth shawl is completed I have picked up the Viennese Shrug from Spring 2005 of Interweave Knits. I started this project a while back, and decided it was time for a revisit. I unpacked it, looked at it confidently (as it is a super lacy pattern) decided that I couldn’t deal with the minor mistakes in the seed stitch pattern, frogged the whole thing without batting an eyelid or twitching with guilt and shame, started again, and am now almost done with the first half. I am so glad I did, so, so glad.

With that shrug in the works, I have a nagging voice in the back room in a whispery-whiny voice saying “what about them green leaf socks?” what about it? “you finished one” ya so? “where’s the other one?” it’s halfway there “well? are you gunna finish it?” oh, right. Them green leaf socks are still hanging out at bedside waiting to be finished. My doctor says that this is the symptom of the dreaded second sock syndrome. I agreed, I know, I know, it will be finished. Give me some time. Really, I promise. Don’t break my kneecaps, I’ll have em done, I just need more time. Note to self…finish socks to prevent mild case of schizophrenia from burgeoning into full blown psychosis. In the meantime, somewhere even further in the back room is a bag with some tiger striped socks roaring to get done or is it meowing. Not sure…

Anyway, perhaps the stress of the various unfinished knitting jobs can be attributed to these antibiotics. Something bit me a few weeks ago (methinks a very dirty fly) and the bite went from a small little itchy bump into something a blazing, scathing monster the size of a tea saucer. The thing was nasty and mean looking so my urgent care doctor put me on some antibiotics. Upon receiving my new drugs, I open the bottle to take my first dose, and sure enough as I looked at it, it said DAN nicely printed on one side. Huh? Ya. Go figure. Anyway, the swelling's gone down. I don't have leprosy, but antibiotic DAN makes me queasy in the tummy.

Congrats on finishing that huge shawl, what's it like to wear? (hmm, maybe you haven't tried it on yet, it being July and all...)

Meg, the shawl is surprisingy warm. It makes July feel like August!
